Tips for Memorizing Scripture

We all know that memorizing Scripture is so important. God’s Word brings us close to Him; it brings comfort and wisdom.

If you’re anything like me, dear Reader, you struggle with memorization! I forget people’s names almost immediately after I meet them. I frequently forget where I parked my car. And worst of all, I sometimes forget an ingredient when I’m cooking. (Sorry, Hubby).

In this spirit, I hope the following practical tips will help you to memorize Scripture.

  1. Pray! God encourages us to know his Word, so of course, He will help us to memorize, understand and love His Word.

  2. Memorize in Community. Whether with your family, in a small group, or in a larger congregation, Scripture memorization in a community is a powerful way to learn God’s Word with encouragement and accountability.

  3. Note cards. Deuteronomy 6:8-9 says we are to bind God’s Word to our hands, our doorposts, and our gates as a constant reminder of His commands. I am a seminary student, and I would be lost without my notecards. Using notecards to memorize Scripture is versatile. Place them on your mirror, in your car, or on your refrigerator, anywhere that you will see frequently.

  4. Audio Bible. With today’s technology, there are many ways to hear God’s Word and to listen to sermons. Listen while you’re cooking or in the car. I listen to it as I fall asleep at night. Remember, faith in Christ does come by hearing!

  5. Dwell on it. When I’m deeply studying one portion of the Bible, I tend to read the same verses over and over. This really helps me to retain what I am reading and understand His Word more profoundly. (Some suggested places to start are Romans 8, Psalm 1, Ephesians 2:1-10 and John 3).

  6. Sing it! Last semester, I took Greek. It was tough. The best way for me to memorize those difficult verbs was by using song. It really helps us to memorize by singing!

  7. Read out loud, or write it down. Both are excellent ways to help us memorize, dwell on and retain God’s Word.

    BONUS tips:

Don’t forget to memorize the reference.

Think about applying the verse to your life, and pray that God will help you to do so.

Review what you’ve learned from time to time.
