Letting go…

Letting Go...

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways, acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)

It’s that time of year…

Whether your little one is just starting preschool or your teen is off to college, letting go isn't always easy. Moms may wonder:

Will they be ok without me? What if they choose the wrong friends?

You'll feel them slipping away and growing more independent. That can be tough for some moms. Having had a difficult childhood, I wanted to protect my own children from anything stressful or bad. So I was always rescuing them from difficulty, whether from a mean kid or a scraped knee. But I was actually doing them a disservice. I didn't equip them.

I was parenting from a place of fear.

I was so worried about protecting them from the world that I didn't teach them how to live in it. Life is full of struggles and disappointments. Children need to learn to cope with both, so they can be healthy adults.

I should have trusted them to God.

If parents trust in the Lord and equip their children, being a grown-up might not come as such a shock. Equip them by telling them about Christ, model Godly behavior, talk to them about why you make the decisions that you do, let them make choices when possible, and reward them for choosing the right one, pray, pray and pray some more!

Life still throws us curveballs. But if they are equipped, they will make it through. So trust them to the Lord, and let go...I will if you will!

I would love to hear your thoughts! Are you sending a little one off into the world?
